Navigating Uncertainty as a Leader

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, companies are under increasing pressure to transform in order to remain competitive. This requires strong leadership that can tackle the challenges of disruption head-on. The stakes are high, as businesses must navigate new challenges, such as shifting consumer behaviour, rapidly changing technology, new ways of working and volatile economic conditions.  Fredrik Malmsten, Consultant and Chartered Occupational Psychologist at Alumni discusses some helpful considerations for successful leadership during uncertainty.

The Challenge of Disruption

Whatever the nature of the disruption, from technology to war to virus, leaders are compelled to navigate a range of complex challenges in order to remain relevant and competitive. They must retain their ability to test new ideas and manage uncertainty, even in the face of rapidly changing conditions. Leaders will also need to continue to identify new opportunities even in the face of unpredictability; some of these opportunities may well lie outside of their previous experience.

In addition, a disruptive environment cannot stamp out creative thinking. A leader’s role in fostering a culture of innovation and creativity is an important remit and leaders will need to continue to encourage their teams to think outside the box. Ultimately, a leader’s capability for balancing the risk and reward for new initiatives and their continued ability to take difficult decisions will have a significant impact on the future of their organisations.

How leadership must flex with change

Successful leadership through disruption will definitely involve embracing change. Leaders must be open to new ideas and willing to accept change, even if it means straying from traditional business practices. Leaders and their teams must be willing to take calculated risks in order to achieve their goals and stay ahead of the competition.

For any leader, having a clear vision and articulating it well is a core competency. But in times of rapid technology and business model change, with opportunities cropping up on all sides, it becomes critical. Disruption may well challenge their team’s sense of competence because change forces people to question and perhaps redefine aspects of their skillset and lead them to feeling incompetent. Being a strong and supportive role model is essential. This requires a leadership style, which engenders trust and psychological safety within teams and organisations. During a crisis, leaders who have built a personal, relational, and cultural foundation can better focus on the immediacy of the moment.

A leader’s attitude is contagious; even in extreme crisis, an upbeat, can-do attitude keeps people going.

Leaders will also need to encourage creativity and innovation within the organisation by fostering an environment that values new ideas and encourages experimentation. A successful leader will need to exhibit humility and flexibility and change according to what the organisation and circumstances require. Successful leaders understand the importance of collaboration, and work closely with their teams to identify new opportunities and overcome challenges.
